The Artist Hines on Video

I finally downloaded the video of me painting in my Sausalito Studio on YouTube. My friend Steve, a retired CBS cameraman, captured me from start to finish producing one of my Abstract Paintings. It was an incredible experience and I have gotten wonderful feedback from viewers, artists and friends. Utrecht Art Supply store was so impressed by the video that they put it on their corporate web site. The San Francisco store on Van Ness Avenue also put it on their store Blog.

The painting actually took four hours to complete but Steve ingeniously edited the video footage to 7.5 minutes. In the video I am wearing my IPOD and listening to the music of the heavy metal band Rammstein. The music was dubbed over the video so you can hear the actual music I was listening to while painting. There is a point in the video where my brush is moving so fast that even I thought that Steve sped up the video.
The vigorous dance like feel to my movements reveals my love of performance and displays my physical approach to Abstract painting.

Nude Gestures Show at ICB Building

The show opened on Thursday August 9 at Gallery 111 in the ICB Building. It just in time for the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce Mixer. The exhibition hightlighted the works of six artists (Dana Draper, Rhoda Grossman, Larry Gilmour, Allen Lavee, Mardi Horowitz and myself) from the Tuesday morning figure drawing session held in Dana Draper's studio. The drawing sessions focuses on short gestures poses so all the works in the show were from poses lasting no longer than ten minutes.

Typically at drawing sessions I would take a realist approach to drawing the model so when I began attending Dana's Gesture sessions I struggled with the time factor. But later I had an epiphany and decided to take a more abstract approach. Suddenly my sketches began to free up and I began enjoying refocusing my attention, from perfect rendering to using pen and ink to produce beautiful gestural lines accented with colorful splashes of watercolor.
The show runs through August 15th. 480 Gate 5 Road, Sausalito, Ca.
